I'm such a pest but I like that I'm on the verge of breaking a 25 year clothing curse.

You are absolutely NOT a pest!

I think the general consensus is that you are peachy and clear. I really don't see much beige in your skintone. If I were to put foundation on you, I'd go with a Warm or Neutral - those are the clearest and peachiest tones. Neutral contains a bit of pink, as well. Depthwise, I'd guess that you are a level 2 - you look fair but not transparent, and since you say you can get golden brown if you tan, I suspect that you have a fair amount of melanin and so have *some* color to your skin.

So, when looking for colors, keep these guidelines in mind:

Clear vs Muted - stick with clear tones, greying or browning them down only slightly.

Warm vs. Cool - Warmer tones with a yellow, orange, golden base will be easiest to wear and look great in. Cooler shades can still work well for you if they are right as far as degree of clarity and level of contrast.

High vs low contrast - you seem middle to high contrast to me - your hair is considerably deeper than your skintone. So look for a similar degree of contrast in clothing. For example, think of a lime sorbet color - it's a warm yellow green, it's a clear tone, and it's also not that different in depth compared to your skin. You can wear it, but it would take some adjustment in other clothing colors. Now think of a granny smith apple - it's a warm yellow green, it's clear in tone, and it offers greater contrast to your skintone. The granny smith apple green will be easier to throw on and go. You wont' have to work at it.

I found this out for myself not too long ago. I had a striped shirt that was sort of a robin's egg color with golden khaki and teal stripes running through. Very pretty. Wear it a fair amount. Also have an oatmeal colored sweater that I also wear alot - it's a decent light neutral on me. Put them on with jeans and the whole top half of me just sort of looked and felt ungrounded and floaty. I changed the sweater to a darker chocolate brown one I have that still worked with the golden khaki stripe, and suddenly it all looked and felt right on me. So while I can wear the light robins egg blue well, and I can wear the oatmeal just fine, together it was just way too much pastel action for me.

Moral of the story -if you've got shirt you love and the color looks good but is on the lighter end of your spectrum, layer it with a sweater or jacket in a richer, darker color to give it some visual weight and keep you from disappearing or just floating off.

Also remember - if you get all three color qualities in harmony, you'll look AMAZING! if you nail 2 of them, you'll look really good! Only 1 in harmony, you probably won't feel confident and compliments will be scarce (unless the complimenter really just loves that color you are wearing - maybe it's her favorite!) And if all of them are off, then folks will probably recommend you get some sleep, drink more water, take your vitamins, start or stop eating red meat, or bring you chicken soup and tell you to lie down. (You can totally work this effect to your advantage sometimes.)

Now, got a hair question for you: SOunds like our hair is fairly similar in texture. I'm wavy/curly, naturally red, thick, dense, not coarse so much as just dense. WHen my hair is 8" long or longer, it curls into sort of a big spiral form. Shorter than 8 inches, no curl, just this large S wave. It's short now, and the longest bits are about 4-5 inches, stacked in the back, angled to the front like a very short inverted bob. Tight through the back and nape, since it's prone to getting big fast. And I cannot style it. Seems too long to work the wave, goes flat on top and puffy on the sides. It's resistant to straightening with an iron, although I do use one a couple times a week. Takes about 5 hours to air dry (yes, even short). So you can imagine the blowdryer time it would take to style. More than I want to commit to myself. I'm seriously thinking of just pixie-fying it just to make it easier to work with. But then I start craving that sort of curly bob thing...

So, any styling tips for me? I got it cut on 3.13, so I'm not quite a full 4 weeks from my last cut and it's grown out by 3/4 of an inch already...but there are some boufy areas that are just crying out for some snipping...and I'm getting very close to doing it myself.

Guess mostly I just want moral support or something, since I'm not really articulating any question very well...

grrr.

I'd rather go shopping and look at colors with you!

First of all - You are best! Smile

Now lets talk hair, girlfriend.

Typical redheads can have the most interesting type of hair. My hair is straight when short until it hits two inches and begins to wave. After three inches it becomes curlier and curlier. I've started diffusing it lately and I now know that my hair will be in ringlets-ish when I grow it out (Which I've started to recently).

Now lets discuss curl - Depending on if your are genetically set to have curly hair or the s-wave wavy hair.. A certain length or weight will show you. As you said after 8 inches your hair spirals. Cut shorter than 8 it waves. The curl pattern of everyone is different. You have what I call "lazy curls" or curls that don't begin until a longer length is achieved.

It sounds like you have an A-Line bob which is one of the trendiest cuts around right now. I'm concerned about your tools though. Your straightener should slice that hair to smooth slickness. You may consider going and getting a ceramic iron from Sally's but I suggest going to a JcPenney Salon and picking up a CHI iron (Avoid wet to straight ones). CHI irons are the best on the market. They cost around $100 but have a lifetime warranty (As long as you keep the receipt).

Check your blow dryer's concentrator. Its the back part that sucks in air. It should be clear. If you see clogged spots you need to get that out so the air can blow through easier.

Products can help cut blow dry and straightening time if you get products that help. A good blow dry is actually the first and best step to straightening. I recommend Paul Mitchell's Super Skinny Serum. It conditions the hair and cuts drying time by 25-50 percent. Redken makes a straightening balm that you can put in before blow drying or straightening.

Now if you want to create more curl with this haircut I suggest getting some curling products and a diffuser attachment for your blowdryer if you don't have one. To use the diffuser (if you don't know how) - Attach to the blowdryer (Make sure its the right one for it.. I suggest getting a diffuser that is very larger so the hair has more room instead of one of those tall pick-ish looking ones) and move it in a circular motion on your head after applying some products to influence curl.

Read all of that and see if that inspires more questions. Smile

Hi, I am new here, but I've been reading up on the supposed redhead color types.

I have auburn hair with fair to light skin that tans after it burns, and no obvious pink or yellow tones in my skin (but subtle tones of BOTH pink and yellow in my skin) so during the daytime I look kind of ashy. My eyes are dark brown--they're so dark you'd have to look way up close in my eyes to see the brown.

So what type would be recommended for ME?

Welcome to AL, SilverDiva!

Bridget is busy opening up a new store so she may not be by for a while (but maybe she will stop in and prove me wrong! lol)

My completely uneducated guess is High Contrast, partly because your dark hair and eye color are a high contrast with your light skin color! From Bridget's description, it also sounds like High Contrast redheads don't have obvious pink or yellow tones either.

What are your favorite colors for clothing and mu? What colors do you feel the best in, or get the most compliments in? Are there any colors that look horrible on you? That might give us a clue too Smile

Hey there! Girl_geek is absolutely right on all counts - my attendance aroud here has been sporadic, I've just opened a new store, and yes - high contrast sounds right to me!

If you look at a winter palette - all those bright, rich, clear jewel tones - and then at an autumn palette - earthy, muted, still rich, probably all the deeps from both work great on you. For midrange colors, you'd probably gravitate to the winter palette, as they are clear and keep up with the contrast between skin and hair. Mostly I'd be inclined to say skip the pastels unless you absolutely love them-- in which case consider pairing a lighter shade with a deep, dark or rich tone to anchor it.

If you post a picture, we can revisit all this. But you absolutely can follow along with girl_geek - she's got the color analysis thing down cold!

-b.

My coloring - Fair, naturally curly dark red hair, freckles (light golden), combo to oily skin, use 1W Glissade and/or Voile, although I can and have worn 1Y, 1Y/L, and 1Y/L/00 at different times. Would describe my coloring as neutral - not a classic Autumn, not really a Winter, maybe more of a Late Fall?

Thanks for the reply. I'm just quoting this post so I don't forget the questions I'm going to answer.

My favorite colors for clothing? Well, I think darker blues, browns, greens, even white, black, yellow, and I pair them with jeans.

Clothing I get compliments in? Anything green or brown, paired with white. Even plums/wines.

My choices for makeup? Well, I take a neutral fair/light foundation, my eyes love bronze colors as well as purple/plum colors, and even a light pink. I think my lips look great in nudes, warm pinks, and even a mauve or plum of either warm or cool. And for nails, pretty much anything goes, except for greens. I can alternate between cool and warm mu palettes and the colors would look just fine on me.

Colors that look horrible on me? Well, in clothes I'm not so fond of red, and in makeup... well, for some reason my b/f likes me in bright blue eye shadow, but I really hate it on myself. Too dark plums, browns, and reds look terrible on me, but for some reason I could pull off the darkest pink and it would look great on me.

SilverDiva -- I think Bridget's analysis is spot-on! You seem to be drawn a lovely mix of Winter and Autumn colors (or High Contrast and Muted Redheads)! It looks like you already know what you're doing -- but it never hurts to experiment with new colors just to see if something will work! Try experimenting with some of the other colors recommended for your type(s) if you haven't already.

Remember, all of this color analysis is really just a guideline anyway, not rules set in stone. It seems like you have a good instinct of what colors look best on you!

Also remember that sometimes the particular shade of a color can make a big difference. For reds, you can have a bright blue-red (think fire engine red), pinkish-reds, orange-based reds, brownish reds. I don't think there's many people that look good in all of those shades, but I think most people can pull off at least one of them! Or for a more personal example, purple is not normally a recommended color for my coloring (Spring - similar to Peaches and Cream Redhead but I have blonde hair). Lavender, grey-purples, and blue-purples do tend to wash me out a bit. But I think I look good in reddish-purples and plums if they are not too dark! I even have a medium true purple shirt (just a few shades darker than lavender but definitely lighter than a "Purple" crayon) that looks pretty good too!

Sorry to keep the post going. It's been a year for this. But... I got pictures now.

The first one. It's me wearing my glasses.

This is the second one. It's me without glasses.

For some reason it appears that my face coloring changes when I'm wearing glasses or not. It's kinda weird.

Thank you so much for posting this. I've been told I'm an Autumn all my life, and I had dressed accordingly for years, and wondered why some of the colors made me look bruised or ill. A couple of years ago, an artist friend of mine told me that my hair is Autumn, but my skin is Winter, and I should try to find colors that satisfy both. I've got very pale, translucent skin with a pink cast to it and some golden freckles (but not on my face). My skin is so white that the comment I get incessantly is that I look like a doll. And that's pretty much true - my skin doesn't look real, and my eyes, lips, and cheeks appear painted on. If I wear light makeup colors, then you can't see them and I look sickly, but if I wear a darker shade and you can see it, then it doesn't look natural, even though it does look flattering. It looks like I'm wearing makeup. I have hazel eyes that look olive green with a touch of gold most of the time. I have bright red hair; not necessarily copper or strawberry, but not auburn either. There is a lot of brown and blonde in it. But yet in the sun, it looks positively orange.

Here's what I think looks the best, and what I've gotten complimented on the most:
Bright royal blue
Ice blue
Periwinkle blue
Ice pink - the most amazing color for my skin
Lavender
Teal (every shade possible)
Turquoise
Burgundy (more pink than brown)
Black (but I think that's because of the contrast of skin and hair and black)
Dusty plum (a muted purple, more blue than red, kind of like the color of concord grapes)
Bright clear kelly green (more blue than yellow)
Forest green (more blue than yellow)
Taupey dark brown, light pink, brownish-pink, deep plum (for makeup). I keep trying to wear green eyeshadow because of my eyes, but I always end up looking tired.

Olives, warm browns, and all the other earth tones look absolutely STUNNING with my hair, but not so great with my skin. Peach and other orangey colors are the exception; they don't look good with my skin, and they make my hair look dull and greenish.

So I've included a picture here; maybe you can help me categorize myself. I'm thinking Gossamer, but I'm not sure. There's so many dark colors I wear well too. So maybe high-contrast? I appreciate any help you have or advice to give. Thanks for your time!
