It's so neat to see a guy on the boards. How did you think to check a makeup forum for color advice? I mean it makes sense, but not all guys would think of it. Big Grin

I know that when I've tried moss green I look horrific. Pastel colors make my skin look too "happy" and not in a fun way.

I actually found you guys while googling for "Clothing colors for redheads" and saw this. I'm a hairstylist by trade so I know colors but except for myself.. It's very "Physician heal thy self" sort of thing. Wink

I second that! It would go so well with your brown eyes. Good to have you here on the forum! Hi

I agree too. I just need to find something in that color, haha. And thanks for the welcome! Smile

That green looks realy great on you!

I totally know about how we can see thngs clearly when working on others, but struggle for ourselves. I do that with eye makeup, actually! I can write it out for others, sort of diagnose shape and size and such. And I can apply it in real life on others, too. But for myself, well, maybe I'm just bored with my old face - I don't know!

What sort of hair stylist are you? What sorts of cuts/processes are your favorites?

I might have a hair question for ya...if that's ok.

My coloring - Fair, naturally curly dark red hair, freckles (light golden), combo to oily skin, use 1W Glissade and/or Voile, although I can and have worn 1Y, 1Y/L, and 1Y/L/00 at different times. Would describe my coloring as neutral - not a classic Autumn, not really a Winter, maybe more of a Late Fall?

Aha! That makes complete sense. It really is hard to figure out your own best colors, styles, etc. Careful, now you're going to get a million and one hair color and style questions.

Speaking of which, I was going to set an appointment to get my hair colored again... Big Grin

I'm your general stylist. I work for JcPenney. I do cuts, color, and the random updo. I love color. I just did a total transformation on a mom of two wild kids today and she was so thrilled. Definitely makes my day. I'm also going back to School right now too.

I'm always up for questions. You've helped me out a lot so I can return the favor.

And one last question (For now, haha): What would you classify my skin tone as? Peachy? Warm beige? I've always wanted to know what it's called like some people have pink beige, etc. I fixed my first post so the pictures should load better. Big Grin

Wow, I haven't seen this yet - Welcome, Jason - you're just adorable, not at all dorky, and I want your hair color!

I'm nowhere as knowledgeable about color, etc. as some others here, but I think I see cool tones in your skin. I bet you look best in saturated jewel tones - Cobalt, wine, burgandy, berry, hunter, rust, deep gold - those shades. White, black, charcoal or chocolate are probably better than beige, light gray or khaki and you can probably do warm or cool shades as long as it's an intense color and not pale or dull/heathery. I bet you could wear light colors if they had some brightness - like easter egg colors, not too pale. Of the 3 pics you posted I like the green shirt in the last one the best.

So, does that red hair color have a name or are you just lucky?

You know, it's actually pretty cool to speak of this stuff to a male.

54 yrs. old, natural silver highlights. Green eyes, cool skin tone. Level 4 Voile 50/50 C/L is my perfect match foundation. Fave AL product: Nocturne! My YLBB color: Impatiens. Fave eye combos: Blue Coquille with Tide Matte, Pearl with Vintage, Ophelia with Rockbottom, Bouganvillea with anything!

Jason, I was going to guess you had peachy undertones!

I do agree with FoxFyre that you have clear undertones, which means you don't have much beige and have more peach, pink, or yellow instead!

Hi Jason,
Glad to have you around!!!!

You definitely look best in the green shirt. Very adorable. And it makes sense that you do hair... because your hair is great! I'm always trying to get DH to go get a haircut...and he keeps resisting b/c he wants to keep what hair he has!

I know what you mean about making a customer happy being the highlight of your day. I do facepainting and henna art for a living -- and it's the customer's who really pay attention and get excited that make my day. Then I feel like I'm helping the world just a little bit by making someone happy.

You look clear, peachy to me -- but I'm still not sure if *I*'m an early autumn or a late spring...so I'm probably not a good judge...

Lol - Thank you for the welcoming and the lengthy response. I like some cool toned colors but when I wear them they tend to make me feel washed out. I've tried burgundy and wine and they make me look a bit sallow. Black is meh.

Naturally I'm a reddish medium brown but I use Socolor 6RC (Red Copper) with a 10 volume developer to get me some more red. Smile

I agree. I think I don't have my beige at all. My Mom tried to tell me once that I was beige but I never quite saw it like she did.

Aww, thanks! I love doing hair. My hair is actually so fussy - I have naturally wavy/curly hair and sometimes I want to wear it straight but I avoid straightening irons because my hair is also dry-ish (Which wavy/curly hair usually is).

And we do make people happy one person at a time. Smile

I updated that last picture of me because I feel it didn't represent me on a normal day (I looked a lot less ruddy in the skin).

It officially represents me on a normal day. Thoughts?

I'm such a pest but I like that I'm on the verge of breaking a 25 year clothing curse.

You are absolutely NOT a pest!

I think the general consensus is that you are peachy and clear. I really don't see much beige in your skintone. If I were to put foundation on you, I'd go with a Warm or Neutral - those are the clearest and peachiest tones. Neutral contains a bit of pink, as well. Depthwise, I'd guess that you are a level 2 - you look fair but not transparent, and since you say you can get golden brown if you tan, I suspect that you have a fair amount of melanin and so have *some* color to your skin.

So, when looking for colors, keep these guidelines in mind:

Clear vs Muted - stick with clear tones, greying or browning them down only slightly.

Warm vs. Cool - Warmer tones with a yellow, orange, golden base will be easiest to wear and look great in. Cooler shades can still work well for you if they are right as far as degree of clarity and level of contrast.

High vs low contrast - you seem middle to high contrast to me - your hair is considerably deeper than your skintone. So look for a similar degree of contrast in clothing. For example, think of a lime sorbet color - it's a warm yellow green, it's a clear tone, and it's also not that different in depth compared to your skin. You can wear it, but it would take some adjustment in other clothing colors. Now think of a granny smith apple - it's a warm yellow green, it's clear in tone, and it offers greater contrast to your skintone. The granny smith apple green will be easier to throw on and go. You wont' have to work at it.

I found this out for myself not too long ago. I had a striped shirt that was sort of a robin's egg color with golden khaki and teal stripes running through. Very pretty. Wear it a fair amount. Also have an oatmeal colored sweater that I also wear alot - it's a decent light neutral on me. Put them on with jeans and the whole top half of me just sort of looked and felt ungrounded and floaty. I changed the sweater to a darker chocolate brown one I have that still worked with the golden khaki stripe, and suddenly it all looked and felt right on me. So while I can wear the light robins egg blue well, and I can wear the oatmeal just fine, together it was just way too much pastel action for me.

Moral of the story -if you've got shirt you love and the color looks good but is on the lighter end of your spectrum, layer it with a sweater or jacket in a richer, darker color to give it some visual weight and keep you from disappearing or just floating off.

Also remember - if you get all three color qualities in harmony, you'll look AMAZING! if you nail 2 of them, you'll look really good! Only 1 in harmony, you probably won't feel confident and compliments will be scarce (unless the complimenter really just loves that color you are wearing - maybe it's her favorite!) And if all of them are off, then folks will probably recommend you get some sleep, drink more water, take your vitamins, start or stop eating red meat, or bring you chicken soup and tell you to lie down. (You can totally work this effect to your advantage sometimes.)

Now, got a hair question for you: SOunds like our hair is fairly similar in texture. I'm wavy/curly, naturally red, thick, dense, not coarse so much as just dense. WHen my hair is 8" long or longer, it curls into sort of a big spiral form. Shorter than 8 inches, no curl, just this large S wave. It's short now, and the longest bits are about 4-5 inches, stacked in the back, angled to the front like a very short inverted bob. Tight through the back and nape, since it's prone to getting big fast. And I cannot style it. Seems too long to work the wave, goes flat on top and puffy on the sides. It's resistant to straightening with an iron, although I do use one a couple times a week. Takes about 5 hours to air dry (yes, even short). So you can imagine the blowdryer time it would take to style. More than I want to commit to myself. I'm seriously thinking of just pixie-fying it just to make it easier to work with. But then I start craving that sort of curly bob thing...

So, any styling tips for me? I got it cut on 3.13, so I'm not quite a full 4 weeks from my last cut and it's grown out by 3/4 of an inch already...but there are some boufy areas that are just crying out for some snipping...and I'm getting very close to doing it myself.

Guess mostly I just want moral support or something, since I'm not really articulating any question very well...

grrr.

I'd rather go shopping and look at colors with you!

**********************
My coloring - Fair, naturally curly dark red hair, freckles (light golden), combo to oily skin, use 1W Glissade and/or Voile, although I can and have worn 1Y, 1Y/L, and 1Y/L/00 at different times. Would describe my coloring as neutral - not a classic Autumn, not really a Winter, maybe more of a Late Fall?
