While experimenting with some of my new AL samples, I used a MAC eyeshadow, Sketch, as my liner. My eyes swelled up from it. I'd used it only once before, as shadow, and had slight itching; I gave it a second chance b/c I'd first used it during the worst of my spring allergies. When I called MAC, they told me that sensitivity to this pigment wasn't uncommon and Sketch is often returned.

Since reddish purple is one of my favorite colors, I was wondering whether I'd be safe with a more pure form of the pigment, as an AL shadow or hue would be. Would it make a difference? Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Holly

Exact 1N in Aromaleigh, w/ blue eyes, medium auburn shoulder-length curly hair, glasses. Prefer medium to full coverage for an even skin tone. Highly sensitive skin and eyes - borderline rosacea. Probably a "Spring" but love to wear cools, warms, and neutrals, in both clothing and makeup.

Did MAC tell you which pigment in that shadow might be the culprit? If you still have it, could you list the ingredients?

AL lists ingredients for all products, including those trace ingredients that the FDA does not require companies to list. (AL goes beyond the call of duty in this regard!)

Here are some possible AL alternatives:

Drama Red - Ingredients: Mica (CI 77019), May contain Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499) Ferric ferrocyanide (CI 77510) (in Drama Blue, Drama Violet, Drama Teal) , Hydrated Chromium oxide (CI 77289) (In Drama Green, Drama Teal) (CI 77289)

Midsummer frost shadows
Trifle: A rich bordeaux with purple and rose iridescence. Contains: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Ferric oxide (CI 77491), Tin Oxide (CI 77861)

Swoon: A deep gray-black with brilliant rose and gold iridescence. Contains: Mica (CI 77019), Titanium dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Ferric oxide (CI 77491), Tin Oxide (CI 77861)

Pure Hues

Garnet: A deep wine with medium shimmer. Not for use on the lips. This mica contains Mica (CI 77019), Ferric oxide (CI 77491)
Zinfandel- A rich red burgundy with high shimmer. Safe for use in lip balms, glosses. This mica contains Mica (CI 77019), Titanium dioxide (CI 77891), Carmine (CI 175470)
Ruby- A rich ruby red, medium glimmer. Safe for use in lip balms, glosses. This mica contains Mica (CI 77019), Titanium dioxide (CI 77891), Iron Oxides (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), Carmine (CI 175470)

The new Pure Hues that may be close to Sketch are Delicate Burgandy and Loganberry. I couldn't find the complete ingredient listing for these (probably because they're new) but I'm sure Kristen would provide them if you emailed her.

Try to compare these ingredients with the ones listed for Sketch. Hopefully, the one that caused problems won't be in any of the AL products and you'll be able to find a shade that you love and loves you back!

Hi - likely the pigment that was problematic for you in the Sketch pencil was Carmine or Cochineal. It's a naturally derived red pigment that shows up in lots of things, but can be bothersome in eyeshadows and liners. I have a hard time with that one, myself. Marisa gave you super advice for looking at the ingredients in the AL colors - and I've found that even those with Carmine don't bother me as much as the other brands did. But there are so many awesome reds and purples and maroons to try that don't have it, you won't even miss it!

My coloring - Fair, naturally curly dark red hair, freckles (light golden), combo to oily skin, use 1W Glissade and/or Voile, although I can and have worn 1Y, 1Y/L, and 1Y/L/00 at different times. Would describe my coloring as neutral - not a classic Autumn, not really a Winter, maybe more of a Late Fall?

Hi! What a wealth of info, thank you so much. I will definitely find out the culprit from MAC before I experiment further. I have had only one other problem with one of their shadows - a pink shimmery one whose name I can't remember. The glitter was the problem. Their pencil liners have always been OK, but no liner - nothing! - lasts on me like mineral e/s with AL's sealant, even if I encounter something noxious like fresh-mown grass and tear up a bit. Hopefully I will find a replacement to put together a new look soon!

Holly some other good ones to try are SPs Amaryllis and Lisianthus. Also mixing just a touch of Drama Violet with Drama Red may get that one closer to what you are looking for. In this same family Tuscany and Raisin also workk very well for lining with a lighter day time approach.

Classic pale Ivory with freckles & pink flush tones. Now that I'm gradually graying, my hair color is constantly evolving. Currently a dark golden brunette (think a darker Mocha with some lighter golden brown highlights). Blue/Grey Eyes with flecking of brown, gold & khaki in the iris.

With fall finally settling in here, I'm about a 2 level Y(3)/L(1) at the moment, wearing more of the neutral tones-warmer neutral tones. In my natural state, I'm a true Winter from CMB. But I can easily get away mixing things up seasonally. White Gold/Platinum/Silver for jewelry, but can (and do) easily wear copper, rose gold and antiqued gold tones.

What I think is that if some cosmetic product cause you any allergic reaction, you shouldn´t try or use this product anymore and not try its alternatives...because the allergic reactions are not always fun... and the more allergic reactions you will have the bigger allergic reactions you will have.
If there are allergic problems with pigment eyeshadows, you should rather use another eyeshadows which you have already tried and experienced no reactions so you know that they are safe for you. But certainly I would not try new ones that could be any risk for you.
Because every new allergic reaction is 10% of bigger allergic sensitivity for you as it is growing
