Hey everyone! I'm looking for suggestions for brushes on a budget of $50 or less. Currently I have a kabuki and a pointed eyeshadow brush, but the rest of my brushes are falling apart. By the end of this month,I'm going to have about $50-75 in fun makeup money, since my insurance is finally covering a lot of my medical bills. I've already decided I want to buy a lot of samples for eyeshadows, but I do need some brushes. What would you suggest for a budget brush kit? I'd like a brush to apply primers/finishing powders with and a few eyeshadow brushes. I do not use gel eyeliner, but I do like to wetline shadow around my eyes. Thanks in advance!

If you wait for sales you can get several Aromaleigh brushes for $50 Smile Browse through the selection and see what appeals to you:

I know you already have a kabuki, but whenever you can afford it, I HIGHLY recommend the Silky Smooth Taklon Kabuki -- it is the softest brush I've ever had, and gives an amazing finish! I don't have many of the other taklon brushes but I'm sure they are just as soft (most of my AL brushes are discontinued now, the taklon brushes are newer...)

For finishing powders, the Fiber Optic All-Over Face brush is perfect for getting the sheer finish that you need with finishing powders! (Also works great for Coquilles if you use them.)

What sort of primer are you using? If you are using a powder primer (Porcelaine, Silk, etc.), the All-Over Face works well if you want a very sheer application, or you can use a kabuki or sponge for a heavier finish. (I use a sponge for my Porcelaine/Silk mix.) One of the larger face or buffer taklon brushes could also work.

For eyeshadows, I'd recommend a basic oval brush such as the Small All-Over Eye brush -- it's very versatile for lots of different applications (highlighters, lid colors, maybe even crease colors). If you can only get one eyeshadow brush, I think a shape like this is most versatile!

I have a small brush similar to the Line & Smudge brush which I use for detailed work like crease colors, highlighting the inner corner, etc. Depending on how small AL's brush is, it might work for lining too.

The Slant Eye and Perfect Line Eye could each be used for eyelining. The Slant Eye could also be used to create cat eye / winged looks.

The smaller Fiber Optic brushes are great for eyes too -- I use the Ultra Posh for washes or applying a sheer amount of color to a large area, and the Ultra Cute is great for blending, highlighters, crease colors, etc.

I do have that kabuki! I love it dearly, it's currently my only AL brush and I'm very impressed with the quality. Hence the reason I'm ordering new brushes from here as opposed to my local drugstore.
For primers, I'm thinking of trying some, not sure which at the moment, but I will be looking a little bit. I'm most interested in the silk, since it can moisturize.
I'm mostly interested in adding to my eyeshadow brush collection, since those are giving out on me at the moment. Thanks for all the suggestions!
I might just go for the all over face, a regular blush brush, and several eyeshadow brushes. I have the fiber optics blush brush and am very impressed with it, so the eyeshadow brushes are definately on the list.
Thanks a lot!

Arg, I meant to edit my post to say that the kabuki is my only AL taklon brush! My 2 AL brushes are the fiber optics blush brush and my kabuki. I'm quite impressed with both.

I also use my kabuki for my coquilles (unless I am spot concealing then I use a small pointed taklon brush).Do you wear blush or bronzer?

I generally use blush, but I'm interested in trying the AL bronzer, unsure of which shade. I do like my pale skin, but I think the color of a light enough bronzer could look very nice on my cheeks during the summer, and fit the season without going overboard or compromising my style.

You could get away with the medium bronzer. It is very light.I wear 2yl in summer(I think i look lighter though sometimes)and the medium bronzer just gives me a warm glow. The bronzer itself is almost more on the nude side then a super brown colour like most.I use a large fiber optic brush for an even application that I can build on if I want more.I also use a fiber optic brush for blush for the same reasons.

Thanks Melissa! I'll probably try the medium, and if I have to, I'll lighten it with my ghost voile. I'm thinking more of using it as a blush than as a true bronzer over all my face, so then I'm not as worried about it being too dark. (Worst case senario, I use it as a contour shade!) The fiber optic face brush seems to be emerging as a "must get" on the list of brushes! This is really helpful, thanks!

I agree! I have a now-discontinued AL brush that is almost exactly the same shape, and I use it every day for eyeshadow. It's great for applying shades to the lids, blending crease colors, applying highlight shades to the browbone, and even smudging. It holds a lot of pigment without a lot of fallout. The new taklon variety Girl Geek mentioned looks almost identical in shape. My brush (the discontinued one) is made of natural fibers, but I do own a couple other AL taklon brushes and am thrilled with them. I can't imagine that the taklon eyeshadow brush would be anything less than fantastic. Smile

Yep, I have an old non-AL small oval brush like this, and for a while it was my ONLY eyeshadow brush! And it's still the most versatile now Smile

In my experience, any shape of brush washes well if you just reshape the bristles while they're still wet....

I also recently received some brush guards that you put on your brushes after you wash them to help them retain their shape. I posted pix on my blog if you're interested.

The Aromaleigh brushes are great and I really like the EcoTools brushes, too.

Girl_Geek, I mean can you get all the product out? With some liner brushes I've had difficulties doing so. Also, some brushes have bristles that fray like crazy. Thanks though!
Thanks Zhariel!

Staci, I use a drop or two of olive oil on a folded paper towel to completely get rid of product left on my lining brushes. I stroke the brush back and forth (never in swirls or circles) over the olive oil until there are no more traces of product, adding more oil to the paper towel as needed. Then I wash the brush thoroughly with mild dish detergent to make sure all the oil is gone as it would interfere with the application and wear of eyeliners. This also works great for removing concealer, creme eyeshadows, lippies, really anything oil- or wax-based. Just be sure to get ALL the oil out-- sometimes it takes 2 washes. I learned this by watching one of EnKore's brush cleaning tutorials (can't remember which one at the moment). HTH! Smile

I haven't had any problems with taklon brushes fraying -- only my natural hair brushes have frayed. The only taklon AL brush I have is the kabuki, and I don't have any problems washing it although I do have to rinse it out a few times to get everything out! (I think just because the bristles are so tightly packed together!) I also have a non-AL taklon eyeliner brush that I wash every day with Neutrogenia Fresh Foaming Cleanser (which is a makeup remover and cleanser in one -- I didn't like it on my face so I thought I'd try it with brushes) and it removes all the eyeliner -- the orange bristles have not stained at all even though I use the brush every day!

All of my other brushes I just wash with baby shampoo, seems to work for me...

I've been cleaning my brushes with Dr. Bronner's Pure Castille soap in almond scent and I really like the results. So I definitely recommend that.

I've not had a problem with any of my brushes but the e.l.f. ones fraying, so I tossed the e.l.f. brushes.
