What can anyone tell me about the silk powder primer? It says on ingredients "silk powder." Is that just minerals like the makeup or what? And how does everyone like it? I have huge pores on my lower forehead, nose and into cheeks a little bit, and chin. I'm looking for a good primer that I can wear. It can't have plant ingredients in it, like any plant names that are oil, gels or extracts.

Welcome to Aromaleigh!

I'm going to guess that silk powder comes from silk, but I really don't know so don't base your decision just on me Smile

As far as for how I like it, it does help minimize the appearance of my pores. It also might have some very mild oil-control properties and might help make my Voile last longer -- but since I always use it with Porcelaine I'm not sure what product is doing what Smile The silk powder is also supposed to be good for balancing moisture content in dry skin, though I don't know from personal experience.

If you have oily skin, check out the Porcelaine primer -- I know that this helps make my Voile last longer without streaking or wearing off on my super oily skin. It doesn't do much for oil control for me; however, most products don't control my oil. I do know that Porcelaine helps control oil for other girls though!

What do you want your primer to do? Minimize pores, oil control, moisturize, make your makeup last longer, etc.? If you simply want to minimize pores, a dusting of the Ultra Resolution Finishing Powder on top of your foundation can also help with that. I also find that the URFP helps my Voile last longer without streaking.

If you decide to sample one or more of these three products, also keep in mind that you can get different results with different application techniques. Experiment with applying the different powders before or after your foundation to see which way you prefer. Try applying with a sponge for heavy coverage, kabuki for medium coverage (the Silky Smooth Taklon Kabuki is the softest brush ever!), or a fluffy brush or the Fiber Optic Face Brush for the lighest possible coverage.

You may also find that the Voile or Glissade foundation gives you everything you need, without using a primer or finishing powder Smile

Here's what I found from a site that calls it: Silk Dust:

Pure Silk Dust "reflects UV radiation and has 18 vital amino acids." This product also contains no mica so it gives a neutral appearance to the skin.

http://beauty.about.com/od/powder/gr/everydayreview.htm

From another site:

Silk Powder is produced from high quality silk using sophisticated technology in order to retain it's chemical properties, and is made up of 100% fibroin, which contains 18 kinds of amino acids and trace elements essential to the human body. Silk Powder serves as an ideal protein enricher for high quality cosmetics.

Users can expect it to help maintain moisture levels in the skin, prevent dryness, the crystalline structure reflects UV radiation, has anti-bacterial properties, and in hair care products will improve luminance and elastic behavior. Please note silk powder does not dissolve in water or ethanol. Can be used in a wide variety of products such as shampoo, conditioner, hair treatment, body wash, body lotion, cleaner, toner, makeup foundation, lipstick, mascara, color cosmetics.

To answer your questions, I want something that will make the pores disappear! I'm sure that's too much to ask for any product. I tried the mineral base at one time but can't decide if I like it as well as BE. So I went back to that for a while. I also am 53 years old and have an oily T-zone. I can't believe it at my age! I always had oily skin growing up. Now it's just a pain - but do I look old!? Not at all! Ha!

Cynsall,
Have you tried the Ultra Resolution Finishing Powder? It helps to minimize the appearance of pores.

I love using a 50/50 mix of silk powder and porcelain as a primer to lessen the look of my pores and keep the shinyness (sp?) down.

For pores I'd definitely recommend either the Silk Primer or the Ultra Resolution Finishing Powder (any color) -- or both for the perfect finish Smile

Like Peacock, lately I've been using a 50/50 mix of Silk and Porcelaine as a primer (I apply it with a sponge for heavier coverage), and also use a light dusting of URFP (applied with the All-Over Face Brush) on top of my Voile. This seems to be the best combo for me -- helps my very oily skin a little (no product helps it a lot, lol), makes my makeup last all day without streaking (as long as I also use blotting sheets!), and does help reduce the appearance of pores Smile

Boy, you all are a wealth of information! I might try some of the finishing powder and maybe also the silk. When I did wear this makeup I finally had settled on the glissade as I couldn't get the voile to look very good. It's almost too dry. In the winter time I don't have nearly as much trouble with the oiliness either. I don't know what made me so oily this summer! It's been awful!

Age 53, brunette, brown eyes (almost black), wore a glissade 3 CL I think, as I don't want to look as pale as I am.

The slik powder does a pretty good job of making pores disappear if you apply it first, with a sponge. What I do now is mix it with the Hi-Res finishing powder and apply that first thing in the T-zone, sometimes after primer. This technique has been working really well for me, and I have really awful obvious pores.

custom mix of: voile/glissade 1YL-2YL plus a bit of Lilas Coquille. Green eyes, Dark purple/brown/black hair, freckles. Current faves: Bella, Sinisterrouge, and Luminary!

Oh, so you apply two things mixed together even though one of them is a finishing powder! Hmmm. I got my samples yesterday and tried the silk powder today under my makeup so I think it's pretty good. I can still see my pores though, especially foreheard right above my nose and eyebrows. UGH! So I will try something else tomorrow.

That is the beauty of mineral makeup -- there are no "rules"! You can use any product over or under your foundation -- they're all powders so you can layer them in any order you want, or mix them together!. Some people use the Silk or Porcelaine primers as a finishing powder; others use finishing powders such as URFP or Metamorphasis as primers. Some mix products; e.g. I mix Porcelaine and Silk and use it as a primer. Others mix several products to use as a finishing powder. Have fun, experiment, and just do whatever works best for you! Smile

Yes! To everything girl_geek said. Flexibility and customization are one of the funnest things about powders. Smile

I find it really helps to use the flocked sponge for applying anything to fill in pores. When I want to be as flawless as possible, I use: a face primer like AL's; a mix of 2 parts Metamorphose, 1 part silk, 1 part Ultra Res, applied with a sponge; then Voile/Glissade, applied with a kabuki brush. Finish with URFP applied very lightly with the FO brush.

custom mix of: voile/glissade 1YL-2YL plus a bit of Lilas Coquille. Green eyes, Dark purple/brown/black hair, freckles. Current faves: Bella, Sinisterrouge, and Luminary!

Yep, you can do whatever you want! When I travel I take a little container of the silk primer, foundation and finishing powder all mixed up and it works fine.

Oily skin in our younger days really is a benefit as we age, huh? I'm 54 and am just starting to see some little tiny wrinkles.

54 yrs. old, natural silver highlights. Green eyes, cool skin tone. Level 4 Voile 50/50 C/L is my perfect match foundation. Fave AL product: Nocturne! My YLBB color: Impatiens. Fave eye combos: Blue Coquille with Tide Matte, Pearl with Vintage, Ophelia with Rockbottom, Bouganvillea with anything!

For me (regardless of what AL products I use on my face), the flocked sponge is key in minimizing the appearance of my pores. I notice when I apply my MMU with just a kabuki brush, my pores seem accentuated. When I lightly pat, pat, pat all over my t-zone with a flocked sponge after my kabuki brush application, they are hardly noticeable.

Note: I do not use the flocked sponge after I apply my finishing powder.

That's all good ideas! I think I'll try the sponge. I think I already have one and I have the samples, so I will try using that. I agree that using just a brush almost makes the pores look more prominent. Thanks!

Hmmm. I have a flocked sponge, but I tend to only use my kabuki. I'm gonna start using the flocked sponge & see if there's a difference. I too have very oily skin & need to minimize my pores as much as possible!!
