So I was going to have the challenge be wear minerals as a lippie, but then I saw this great silent film with Clara Bow in it last night. So, the challenge is to emulate the women of the silent film era, specifically Clara Bow if you can Smile Double points if you make your own lippie using minerals (which might be useful to get those dark lips). Triple points if you do your photo in black and white Smile Here is a link to a website a/b her Clara Bow
Here are some pics:

About using minerals as lippies, here is a link to what is safe lip safe

Any rocks! shadows that are not blue or green are safe to use according to Miss K. All the Pure Hues are marked as lip safe or not in the descriptions.
Here is a link to the "Make your own lipgloss" kit that was sold a while back (it includes Pure Hues as colorants)
Some lip safe Pure Hues

Have fun!

OOH! Fun!

2 things that really make the silent film star look -

1. BROWS! Look at how hers are thinner and angled downward - hard to pull off in real life, but fun to play with. If you experiment with them, you will learn so much about how eyebrows can completely change the entire look of your face, for better or worse. (And that judgement is in the eye of the beholder - so make sure your brows communicate what YOU want to say on a daily basis.)

2. LIPS - as much as the dark color, the shape is super important if you are going for authenticity. Small, peaked, beestung, drawn and defined - not much gloss going on here, either.

Exponential points if you do a "wearable" interpretation and a "literal" interpretation!

Nice challenge, girlfriend!

My coloring - Fair, naturally curly dark red hair, freckles (light golden), combo to oily skin, use 1W Glissade and/or Voile, although I can and have worn 1Y, 1Y/L, and 1Y/L/00 at different times. Would describe my coloring as neutral - not a classic Autumn, not really a Winter, maybe more of a Late Fall?

Thanks Robyn! I actually probably was thinking of Nancy Carroll--I think that was who was in the movie...I am notoriously bad with faces, and had Clara Bow's name stuck in my head for some reason. Anyways, all of these ladies are very pretty and are all great inspiration!

OK - Here's my first take:

And just for fun:

I used Umber, Smokescreen and Blackplanet layered on the lids over Carbon cream shadow, black pencil liner and mascara (same pencil used for brows, which were ridiculous in real life) and oyster to blend edges.

Cheeks were Dolly rouge. Face was Alabaster topped with 1N glissade. In retrospect, I should have just done normal foundation - would have been prettier. Lips were a dark wine color topped with a blackened burgundy. They should have been narrower. Also looks ridiculous in real life.

But I have decided that I actually like black eyeshadow on me. I've always love it on others, just not on me.

Tapestry, here I come!

Bridget - spectacular!!!! The colors are just gorgeous, application spot on.

I like black shadow on you too. Ok, so it's not something you wear everyday...well, maybe...I know I would... but it definitely works, especially with certain outfits or occasions.

Melissa, I'm always up for a Dita look. Although she deserves her very own whole section!

Bridget, what an awesome look, I love it! Though I could see how the lips might look funny in real life, lol, but if you just change the lips a bit this is totally a look you can wear for a sexy date night or something Mwahahaha Even your hair looks kinda like some of the example pictures!

B: You've got the whole feeling of the silent movie siren down to a tea. You look great! I love the lips. I've got to try that myself.

Thanks, girls! I really wanna see YOU all do this too! I know Cin will nail it, and Melissa can totally rock the Dita look...but gosh, I sure want to see Girl_geek's baby blues done up like Lillian Gish or Gloria Swanson, and you too, Robyn! Can you do beestung lips? I'd pay good money to see you all!

Bridget - I like the way you pulled that off. It looks great. You can wear black eye shadows.

I'm sitting here giggling at myself trying to figure out if I should give this look a go tomorrow or do a gothy vamp look.

We're doing a demonstration for police departments in Massachusetts of how Mike's dogs are trained to search buildings for suspects, search close areas like crawl spaces and defending itself and it's handler if attacked while in the building.

I've been in rare form lately, so the thought of someone make up like a silent film actress or Elvira while working a dog is amusing.

My husband is saying that I am demented. He's got a mental image of Betty Boop saying AUS, FASS & WACHE in a high squeaky voice.

BTW - I think NaomiLael can TOTALLY pull off this look flawlessly.

Bridget, love it, especially the first and last pics. I love the shape of the application of the black shadow in the second pic--the way it gets higher on your brow bone towards the inner corner of your eye. Yes, your really have the hair for this...I was thinking that as I was searching for photos Smile And momof2angels, sure you can do a Dita look...although that could be the topic of another challenge too Wink And don't worry everybody...you don't have to go extreme and blot out your natural lash line or do a really bee stung lip...(unless you want too). As you can see in the pics, the angle of the brows and the degree of lip-artistry is different for each actress and even each pic (haha, if you draw your brows on, you can change their angle each day, imagine that!)

Hey, I was experimenting a bit last night, and you can almost mask your brows by putting a whole lot of concealer over them, and then using the black and white option for the photo. If any of you are technically savy, to further mask the covered up brows, I bet the blemish fixer under "beautify" under "edit" in photobucket would further erase any traces of the covered up brow. Haha, b.c. I am going for the whole shebang!

Okay ladies, this is my first try at this one! Smile
I really couldn't capture this on the pics...but it was much smokier/darker in person...
This was so much fun!

Face:
-Usual Voile Mix: lots of it!
-Cheeks: Cherrybomb + Sundaygirl
-Lips: Vivid + Purple Princess (but 'enhanced' to make darker)

Eyes:
-Fox on lid/lower
-Purple Princess on outer vee, and lower- in a downturned angle
-Velvet Dream above inner crease
-Petite Fours/Rosy Cheeks to blend out edges
-Sunny Dispostion on outer brow

I tried to make the more downturned/melancholy/sad eyes...but look kind of silly...
Hope you enjoy regardless of my funny faces... Smile

I want to try this again...And will apply everthing darker so it will show up better!
Smile Naomi
