thx for the reminder, Cin! sorry I forgot about posting a new challenge this AM, ladies! (I'm a little preoccupied, later on I'll post elsewhere about what's distracting me - it's all good! Wink )

let's step outside our comfort zones this week - pick one colour that scares the *$&*#$& out of you and pair it w/at least one colour that makes you feel all warm and fuzzy (scary + safe = expanding horizons Big Grin ); if you don't mind, pls tell us why your "scary" colour gave you the heebie-jeebies and then let us know how you felt about it after you combined it w/one of your tried-and-true faves! Smile

pls have fun w/this, I'd love to see lots of ladies posting looks! Smile

thx Cin! I'm going to be pushing myself w/this one as well...

btw, I don't expect everyone to fall in love w/their "scary" colours; in fact, I'll be shocked if we don't see at LEAST one "I'm not AS scared of this colour as I was, but I still don't love it, and if I don't decide to just give it away, I'll never even use up the entire baggie, let alone buy a f/s of this..." but ya never know for certain until you at least try, right? Wink

This is a good challenge for me. But it will be difficult to want to post a photo if I'm not crazy about the color. I'll try to think positive...I may end up loving my *scary* color.

Neat idea! My creative juices are already flowing just thinking about this ... I just realized there is one color family that I have never worn outside the house, so some evening (in case it doesn't turn out nice for work!) I'm going to play with this color. Now I just need to figure out what to pair with it ... Mwahahaha

Robyn -- don't be afraid to post a photo! Everyone will be posting photos of colors they may not like that much, and besides, we all know you will be beautiful no matter what colors you're wearing! Smile I really doubt I'll wear my look outside the house, but I will still post photos if I have time!

y'all wanna know something funny? it's MATTES (esp dark mattes!) that scare me - I have a moss PEm that I got as a freebie, had it since Moses was a kid, never worn it, yet can't bring myself to get rid of it... that's my "scary" colour for this challenge! now to figure out what to pair it with - maybe another green (I love blast Elemental!), or a gold or even a yummy brown...hmmm... but I may not do this until later in the week when I know I don't have to go anywhere, just in case I hate it...!

Here's mine. I chose grey blue colors because I tend not to use them with my eye color. I feel like it just blends too much.

Face: silk powder, modge podge mixture of voile colors, then clear finishing powder over the top with pure cover #2 under my eyes.

Brows: auburn eye brow pencil

Cheeks: corset rouge

Eyes: wave matte over entire lid, bete noire in bette over that and blended up a bit above the crease. A bit of pure eyes circe and EL entangle in the very middle of my lid with more circe blended a bit on the brow bone with alchemy pure hue under the brow. Make Up Forever Aqua Eyes in a teal color.

Lips: sheer red gloss

I for the most part dislike grey-blues on me so I used those. I don't think they're *bad* on me, just many other colors look better. I adore circe and corset so used those as well.

Looks good, Hottie! I also tend to avoid blues that match my eye color, but I've discovered some fun things recently -- for example, a blue eyeshadow that's a bit more blue than my eyes can actually make my eyes look green in comparison!

Anyways, here is mine, I went all out for you gals this week! Big Grin My scary color is BLACK! I have never worn black eyeshadow or even a black eyeliner in my entire life -- there were too many girls in my high school and college who piled on the black eyeliner with no eyeshadow, and I knew that it would look bad on my light coloring. (And I still know that application would look bad!) My safe colors are any form of bronze, copper, gold, and warm brown, so I chose Fraud as my "safe" color!

This look is still a bit over-the-top for me (I think the black looks even darker in real life), but hubby actually liked it Wink I could see myself wearing a toned-down version of this (i.e. less black in the crease and/or lower lid) for a date night, or *maybe* a bit of black eyeliner on the upper lid only for work Smile

  • Blackcelebration in crease, outer lid, and dry on lower lashline
  • Fraud on rest of lid
  • Glow just under brow
  • A touch of Persian Kitten between crease and brow
  • Blackplanet wetlined on upper lid and outer 1/3 of lower lid

Hottie, looks good! And just to remind you, since you posted first you'll get to select next week's challenge colors. There's so many to choose from, you might want to start thinking about it now. I know I always have a hard time picking.

Girl_geek - it's a good thing I was sitting down or I might have fallen over......you in black shadow!!! Not one, but TWO blacks! And it looks great!!! Clap

I knew you'd pick black, and I had the feeling it would look good as well, but it's even better than I thought. Your eyes look different, more defined with the dark liner & crease, but damn honey, it sure does look good. The last pic - the one in the bottom right, looks so sexy! I can see why your hubby liked it. Granted, not your every day look, but you should definitely start sneaking in some black here & there. Mix a bit in with one of your favorites, it makes it so much easier, and doesn't look at all scary or piled on. Big Grin

I guess this means I've got to face my fears and select something yellow. My arch nemesis, my kryptonite. But hey, if girl_geek can do black, I can do yellow, can't I?

lol Cin -- yes, I'd love to see you in yellow! If you do a golden yellow + black it might actually turn out similar to my look here Smile

I debated for a while about what safe color to wear with black -- at first I didn't think most warm colors would look good with black, and yellow/gold + black made me think of bumblebees and sports team colors! So I was wondering if I should use a cooler lid color instead... But when I was flipping through my sample binder, Fraud just jumped out at me so I had to try it Smile

I also did more of a wing with the crease color which defines my eyes more....

PS: I did actually try to wear Tapestry one day, just a little bit layered on top of another crease color to make it more smokey/dark, but I didn't like how it looked so I washed it right off (thus reinforcing my fear of black) ... that's the closest I've gotten to wearing black before my experiment tonight Wink Although I've worn almost-black colors, like Black Cherry gel liner, the Drama and DQ liners, etc.

I meant to reply to this post too -- mattes scared me for the longest time too! Even now, I only like warm mattes -- I still think cool mattes and pastel mattes look too chalky on me!

Girl_geek, yours looks much prettier than mine!

I think we have similar eye colors and I love to pair a gold/orange with black. You eyes look fabulous with the black! Have you tried a dark grey? That's a good way to transition into black if you want to take baby steps......

Hottie -- I have tried dark grey (Smokescreen), but with my warm skintone, I think that if I want an almost-black color a very dark brown works better than grey for me Big Grin I used to be scared of Chocolate Mousse gel liner since it is so dark, now I wear it all the time!

Fraud definitely makes it you - when I thought about yellow for me, I knew I'd have to pair it with black, and immediately though, oh no, bumblebees - or worse, that awful 80's band Stryper. Eek

I think if you play with it a little, and pair it with one of your preferred colors, you can wear it more often. It's just so far from your comfort zone, so I can understand why you shy away. I think you'll come to like Tapestry, it's definitely a much softer black. And you know I wouldn't b.s. you - if I didn't think it looked good, I'd tell you.

Girl_geek, I'm with you. I think the first dark grey that a make up artist got me to like was a MAC shadow called 'Scene'. It looked hideous in the container but once you got it on, it was almost a warm grey-brown color. It was all down hill from there, I started dabbling in black eye shadow and haven't looked back since.

Smile

Hottie I think the colours you chose actually made me notice your eye colour more.I happen to looove blue eye mu (uumm okay there arent many i dont like Wink). And again GG wow!
Cin,I would love to see you in yellow. It can be a hard colour to play with.If you go too sheer it could look like jaundice.Maybe you could just go all out with it.I am still deciding what I am going to for this.

YAY!! I'm happy to see that y'all have jumped in w/both feet here Big Grin

Hottie, WOW are you fast on the draw, lady! Wink LOL and I agree w/Melissa - I think those blue-grey colours accented your eyes very nicely Smile I could see this as a low-key w/e look...

GG...DANG, girl, this is HAWT!! I know it's probably OTT for you to wear to work Big Grin but for a night out on the town w/your DH, this is FABULOUS (it's no wonder he loved it, your eyes look AMAZING)!! tapestry is a softer black, and altho' I don't have any of the FO eye brushes, I bet they'd help moderate the colour, too...

Cin, instead of the "bumblebee/Stryper" look (that totally made me snort-laugh, btw ROFLMAO ), what about maybe pairing a "scary" yellow w/one of your beloved purples? yellow and purple are opposites on the colour wheel, so they still work, it's just an unexpected combo, and I ~know~ you have at least ONE "safe" purple... Wink can't wait to see what you decide!

alright ladies, I'm gonna walk the walk myself here and do my look today (I figure it's as good a day as any since the only place I'm going today is the boys' school, and I don't even have to get out of the car to pick them up LOL)...

I hope we get more looks today, I love seeing how people tackle their "scary" colours! Smile

Thanks everyone!

Hottie -- that reminds me, I do like Chantal, that is more of a warm grey as well Smile Chantal plus Prim Tweed makes a simple and subtle smokey eye for me!

Tanya -- I'm actually not a huge fan of Tapestry because it has so much silvery shimmer, it's a bit cooler than I like. I'd actually be more likely to use the Rocks blacks on a date night (hehe, never thought I'd say that) Wink

Cin, I was just thinking the same thing as Tanya -- a yellow and purple look might work for you too! If you want to stick with cooler yellows, I recently got a free sample of bigneonglitter and it's a much cooler yellow than any of my other yellows/golds Smile

GG, if you want a black that doesn't have a lot of silver shimmer to it, try backinblack - it's got blue/green sparkles in it, so it doesn't get silvery-black like a lot of the others... I haven't tried blackangel, but that one has pink sparkles instead of silver or irridescent, so that might be another option...

ebony scares me (mostly b/c it's a matte), but I do have a sample of it that I used to use for eye liner (replaced it w/black stay-put pencil)... I wonder if it wouldn't be so scary if I had one of the little FO eye brushes...hmmm... I'll have to give that one some thought... Smile
