Hey everyone,

I am brand new to the forum, but not to AL.

I recently started using Nocturne and I love it! I also love the shimmery-ness of it, but I need more coverage. I would like to know if anyone has any suggestions about which finishing powder/Illuminating Perlé Powders would be a close match in color and shimmery level. Something slightly lighter than the shade of Nocturne might be better, because I am very pale. I was considering the translucent Hi-Res Finishing Powder as well. ...any thoughts?

Much Obliged,

Rakala

Hello and welcome! Smile

I think Allure or Precious Perle or Angel Lum. Divine powder will be closest. The Ultra Res powder in the clear and translucent shades are totally matte, not shimmery at all. I haven't tried the Peaches and Cream or English Rose shades yet, so I'm not sure about those. I know some ladies actually mix a bit of Nocturne into their foundation mixes, because they love the finish so much.

Here's a thread about the color undertones of Nocturne, btw, if you wanted to try matching it with a mix of foundation and perles or Nocturne itself:

Hi Rakala,

Part of your quote, "I recently started using Nocturne and I love it! I also love the shimmery-ness of it, but I need more coverage," is a bit confusing. I'm not sure if that means you've been using it as a finishing powder or simply like the look of it. Nocturne is a night time treatment and not intended to be used as a finishing powder regardless of its coverage. I have tried all of AL's finishing powders and they are not full-coverage powders. However, they do leave various types of "finishes" over your mineral foundation (matte, shimmery, soft-focus, etc.).

If you need more coverage but would like some shimmer, here's what I suggest. Apply your mineral foundation with the flocked sponge (this provides better coverage than a brush), then apply a light dusting of Seraph luminesce divine finishing powder over it. Or, mix a bit of Seraph into your foundation and apply it all at the same time (I've done this and it looks lovely). I tested the Nocturne on the back of my hand with several finishing powders as well as the perle powders and Seraph was almost a perfect match. HTH!

Actually, the Ultra Res Finishing Powders (URFP) are not totally matte. The Clear has a barely-there shimmer which deflects the light and thus makes your pores look smaller! However, the shimmer is extremely subtle so from a normal viewing distance of a few feet away, it will still look matte. You can barely even detect a shimmer when you look close! (If you want a truly matte look, just use Voile or Glissade with no finishing powder or with a light dusting of the Clear.)

The Translucent, Peaches & Cream, and English Rose versions have a bit more shimmer, because the mica that's used to add the color is shimmery. However, it's still a very subtle shimmer since they are very sheer colors and there's not much mica. You can see the shimmer when you look really close, but from a few feet away it's probably not noticeable. I only have Clear and Peaches & Cream myself, but from what I've heard, the three colored ones are all slightly more shimmery than the Clear.

I can't really help you with what powder is the same color as Nocturne -- I am so pale that Nocturne just looks like a dirty brown on my skin, and I've paid attention to the shimmer since it's obviously such a bad color on me! But for nighttime only it doesn't matter what I look like Wink

I was also a little confused about how you want more coverage. Robyn is right -- the finishing powders, Perle powders, etc. are all very sheer. For coverage, use Voile or Glissade (or even Pure Cover for some heavy-duty coverage!) then add another powder for shimmer Smile

Hope that clears things up for you!

Welcome Rakala!

If you are pale you may also want to try a sample of Angel. Remember with the Luminesce Divine Powders, you need a very light hand. Preferably applied with a fiber optic brush. That will give you a very subtle glow.

With the beautiful array of finishing powders that we now have, I still love Illuminator most of all and is the one I reach for the most.

I know it is tempting to want to go straight for the full size, but I strongly recommend that you try several finishing powders in the sample size. The samples are very generous and I think you will have fun trying the different finishes to see which works best for you. Smile

Definitely trying several samples first is the best way to find your ideal finishing powder.

When I did my hand swatch test earlier, I tested Angel finishing powder and it was considerably lighter and more shimmery (think pearlescent) than Nocturne. Seraph is also a bit lighter than Nocturne but when applied sheerly on my skin, they are almost identical in tone. Some perle powders you might also try are Allure, Vision, Mirage, Incandesce and Luminous. They all lean toward the golden beige tones and appear lighter when applied on the skin than how they look on the swatches and in the sample baggies.

I agree with desert sage that a light hand is needed with the luminesce divine powders as well as the perle powders. If you apply them too heavily you could end up looking like a shiny lizard. Smile

I understood her to mean that she does use Nocturne as a treatment at night, but she likes the way it looks on her skin, so she wants something that looks similar (but with more coverage) for day. A lot of people expressed the same sentiment when Nocturne first came out...wish I could find those threads for suggestions!! I think she did say she wants something a bit lighter than Nocturne.

Rakala, have you tried the regular foundation with a finishing powder over it to see if that gives you the look you want? I'd get samples of Glissade foundation for you, since you seem to prefer a slightly dewier look.

Thanks for all the welcomes and advice!

To clarify the confusion Robyn and girl_geek had: I have not been using the Nocturne as a finishing powder. I like the shimmery effect it has on my skin, but I need more coverage than it provides (which is obviously not much.) I suppose if I did not need the coverage, I could use ONLY Nocturne during the day, which is what I was trying to convey. Because it's a treatment, I didn't want to waste it and put it over the foundation, but I do like the color tones and the shimmery-ness of it, so I am looking for something that will have a similar effect OVER the foundation.

Thanks again!

Rakala

green3,

You interpreted what I said correctly; I must have been typing my previous post at the same time as you were, because it wasn't there when I started typing it!

I have not yet tried the foundation with finishing powder- I was thinking that would be the direction I needed to go in, but I was looking for help as to which finishing powders, etc. to try that would be similar to the colors in Nocturne.

Definitely try some samples of different Perles, the Illuminator, and Lum. Divine. They are all really gorgeous, and you're sure to find one you love. Like everyone else said though, less is more when it comes to the application of mineral finishing powders. I like the fiber optic brush best to apply. Hth.

If you want a foundation that is similar in color to the Nocturne, it would probably be one of the linens - which are more of a pure beige....
