Ok, so I don't know if anyone really noticed or not, but I don't really use eyeliner. I have noticed that some people say they have to use a lot of eyeliner in order to pull off certain colors. I haven't ever had "good luck" with eyeliner, except a liquid purple one and a sprakly black one that I got where I get my haircolor. However, lately I think my eyes are more sensitive? If I put it on it stings. Owww!!

Anyway... I guess I'm asking: is eyeliner necessary? Do you think I need eyeliner with this look?

So, that's my question! Also, I sometimes have shaky hands and so am afraid of most liquid eyeliners but the ones I have have a felt tip thingy that I like since it doesn't give a lot if I need to rest my hand on my eyelid while applying. (Does that make sense?)

Anyway, thanks!

I think this would look fantastic with OR without liner! Many ladies use liner to define their lashline, so their lashes appear thicker and more visible. I use it most days, but there are some looks that I leave it off....all depends on my mood.

It does take practice. Have you tried the gel liners? Zhariel just did a great tutorial on gel liners! They're often easier to apply than liquid, which can smear easily.

I use a super thin liner brush from Sephora, some ladies use the Perfect Line Taklon brush and use a "push" method to apply. It's usually advised to do short feathery strokes rather than one continuous line, but whatever way works best.

That technique is exactly the thing I needed to know!! Smile I think another problem is that my eyes have different depths of perception, so I can't see close up with one eye but other other everything is perfect up close, so when I have to close my left eye (the one that sees well close up) the line is crazy because I can't see very well!!

And I can't possibly wear glasses while putting on makeup and I tried contacts a while ago but that didn't work out very well... Too expensive for me, I can't handle putting something in my eye, etc etc etc.

Lol. I don't know if you guys will notice, but one of my eyes will always look better than the other, but that could be my perfectionista-artisty person talking. Smile

personally i think you look fabulous without it! eyeliner is one of those personaly things in my opinion.

for example, i rarely apply eyeliner because i feel like it makes my eyes look smaller and i just dont like how it looks ON ME. ill apply some to my upper lashline sometimes but a very thin line and just a little. ive decided that black eyeliner definitely is not good for me. too sharp of a color. but i really love this brown cream liner i have.

but then on Zhariel I love black liner, on her upper lashline AND her waterline!

so what it all comes down to is honestly if you like it go for it if not i personally dont think its needed. but definitely check out some application videos. i think a touch of winged liner would totally intensify any look (:

I think with your gorgeous eyes and lashes it looks fine without liner. However, I have used darker colors to dry line and love that. Colors like tapestry, charcoal, chantal, tarnish, russet, arbor, cocobean, underworld, swank, etc. spread wonderfully when dry lined and you don't have to have the steadiest hand. That is what I did for the last few years as I was trying to keep with using only minerals on my face, and occasionally would try to wetline but did not like it as much. Finally I gave in to all the rave reviews and tried the gel liners a couple months back. They have amazing staying power and many girls say that they work with even their sensitive eyes. I don't have the steadiest line, but I will line first and then put shadow on afterwards, and I love this. Good luck.

Hey! Didn't see this post. I use a slanted brush like this to wet line shadows and to apply gel liners. You can pick up one really cheap (like 2 or 3 dollars) at the drug store (but obviously not as high quality as the brushes here). I usually line the outside half of my lid and then the inside half of my lid. I use drugstore brushes most of the time, and they work just fine as long as you aren't trying to do something really precise. Since you have a large lid space, you don't have to worry about having a real thin, fine line. And don't worry about tight-lining or applying liner to your water line since your eyes are sensitive. Oh, and my eyes are two different sizes too (opposite of yours)! In my third grade photo I look high because my smaller eye is half shut while the larger one is open TeeHeeHee

I did watch Zhariel's video on her blog. Very informative!! Smile

I guess I have a slant brush, it's attached to my brow sweeper/lash comb thingy.

Smile

Thanks, Tally. Smile I'm going to work on my look for today.

Cool, don't feel rushed or anything Wink I just edited my post (I do that a lot) to add that you don't have to worry about tight lining or lining your water line since your eyes are sensitive.

Hi Carolyn, I admit to having the same problem with one eye looking better than the other. I think you might find though, that you're probably the only one that notices this. I have the same kind of good eye/ bad eye thing going on too. My left eye, sees only in 20/75 vision, while my right eye, is a perfect 20/20. I sometimes wear contact lenses, other days I wear glasses. I think you look great without eyeliner. You HAVE such incredibly big, expressive eyes. And the colors you choose set them off tremendously. In my experience I don't line all the way around the eye the way some do. I start where my lashes start on the top line and take the line all the way over to the outside, sometimes winging it out. With the lower line I never line all the way in. I start from the outside, and work my way about 2/3 of the way over. This is the look that I was told was most flattering for my eyeshape, however, everyone's eyes are different.

40-ish,blond,blue eyes, can wear cool colors mostly, some warms, and neutrals.

You have big, pretty eyes.

When you look in the mirror, do you like what you see? If not, what do YOU think you need to look your best?

I would never go without eyeliner because I feel that my eyes need it. Of course, that's not true for everyone. You look great in both pics.

I think you can pull of looks without liner just fine, especially with bolder eye shadow looks. If it really bothers you, you can always do an extra coat of mascara to make up for it.

Liner is definitely a personal preference. I like the extra definition it gives my eyes some days. Other days I don't use it, or I do it so that it's barely there.

I find gel liners the easiest to work with, though I like UD's 24/7 pencils as a close second. I do have some liquid liners but I find them harder to work with, and traditional pencils are almost impossible for me to manage on my eyes.

My eyes are sensitive, so I don't use gel on my waterline very much. I can't usually wetline with eye shadows on my waterline, either, as it hurts. I can pretty much only use creamy pencils, though sometimes the gels don't bother me there.

I promise I will try to do a better tutorial soon. I actually just got a tripod for my camera, so I can put it right by my mirror and be consistently looking in the mirror as I do my makeup.

Thank you, Sassy! Smile I like it the way my eyes look without it, something about my lashes does the lining for me.

Zhariel I liked your tutorial and if that was an early one then they will only get better. Smile

I have also had problems with eyeliners being too stiff and I hated it when I saw people using lighters to soften it! I always felt like: 'Sheesh! It shouldn't be that hard to put on eyeliner, people!' Smile

I love the way your eyeliner looks, and so I look forward to more tutorials! Smile

I always wear liner because I think it helps add definition to my small eyes hidden behind glasses Smile But as everyone else said, it's a personal preference and if you like your makeup without liner, then you don't have to use it! Since lining all the way around my eyes makes my eyes look smaller, I always liner the entire upper lid but only line the outer 1/3 of the lower lid. Sometimes I will use a mid-tone shimmery shadow all along the lower lid, but never a dark liner.

I have sensitive eyes, and while I've never tried liquid liners, Aromaleigh's Eyeliner Sealant does bother me Frown However, I have no problems with the gel liners or with any pencil I've tried. I also sometimes dryline with a shadow as someone mentioned above. Oh, and I never tightline or line my waterline, I know my eyes wouldn't like that Wink

For brushes, I use a non-AL thin liner brush for gel liners and draw short strokes. For dry lining, I use an angled brush similar to AL's talkon angle brush.

Hehe! Ciao, I am just so excited all the time and I try to make my words have tone, if that makes sense. Sometimes one can write something and it sounds completely different than it would actually sound if they said it with their voice... So, in lieu of someone misinterpreting my words as negatives, I add smilies and exclamations in order to convey tone. I (often) get defensive and offended at first read of common constructive criticism (never here... yet!) so I like to prevent it in other people.

Big Grin Anyway!!

Thanks everyone for all your wonderful advice! I had been feeling like a weirdo for not using eyeliner, but apparently it's ok! Smile

Yay!

G_G - I have been having problems with the eyeliner sealant and am not entirely sure why... It makes me sad, so I think I'll try water next and see if it does the same thing. (It keeps flaking off... Any hints?) I will probably get a gel liner before Halloween! Smile

My vision is so bad ( -9 in the right eye, -9.50 in the left eye) that I always wear my contacts when I put on my makeup. If I don't, even if I'm right at the mirror, I can barely see what I'm doing. So don't feel bad if you can't see to do something without your glasses.

You do a beautiful job without liner.

Btw, the new video I made yesterday shows how I put on my liner a lot better (adjusted my camera placement).

I used to always put on liner with an angled eye shadow brush. I sometimes still do, as it's my preferred brush for along the lower lash line. I actually find the push brush very difficult to work with, though you're supposed to just dip it in, and put it against your lash line and 'stamp' or wiggle it.

Wow, Zhariel! I think you're supposed to put your contacts in before makeup anyway so that you don't get makeup stuck between the contact and your eye... Smile I'm sure you know that.

I will check out your new vids, I'm excited! Smile

Thanks!
